Don't forget - today at 5pm EDT is the deadline to send in comments about better vehicle fuel economy standards to the  U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Making our cars go farther on a gallon of gas is the biggest single step America can take to save oil, save consumers billions at the pump and reduce global warming pollution.

Don't know what to say? Check out our last blog post on it for all the details!

Here is the cover letter we submitted with our signatures:

Sierra Club is pleased to submit this letter on behalf of 49,164 citizens. The attached letter
represents the comments of Americans from across the country who responded to our new Light
bulbs to Leaders campaign calling for leadership to tackle global warming. People everywhere
are taking steps to fight global warming, but we need bold action from our leaders.

Sierra Club has long advocated for raising fuel economy standards to 40 mpg over the next ten
years. This is the biggest single step America can take to save oil, save consumers billions at the
pump and reduce global warming pollution.

NHTSA is responsible for setting the maximum feasible fuel economy standards based upon a
review of economic and technological feasibility. Gas prices are now well over $4 per gallon
across the country, yet NHTSA is shortchanging America by setting standards assuming gasoline
prices will be well below $3 per gallon. The technology is available to make all cars go farther
on a gallon of gas -- farther than NHTSA proposes. NHTSA should be a leader and set final fuel
economy standards using a more accurate price of a gallon of gas to help consumers save money
at the pump and cut global warming pollution.

Please consider this letter as representing the comments of the 49,164 Americans who call on
NHTSA to ensure that America's cars go farther on a gallon of gas.

The time to act on global warming is now - not when the polar bears have become extinct, not when citizens have to uproot their homes and move to higher ground in order not to be flooded (as is now happening in Alaska), North Polar ice cap melts completely. We have to act now before it's too late.

Most suggestions for improvement can't or won't be iniitiated im the short run. one that can and should be is to encourage driver sharing. inspite of the run up in the cost of fuel, most cars continue to be driven with one or at most two people. yet, most cars are built to hold 5 - 6 people. Emphasizing driver sharing can reduce the number of cars on our roads and save on fuel, reducing global heating.
