Rolling Stone Magazine on the Coal Industry

Rolling Stone's August 7 issue has an article entitled "Big Coal's Campaign of Lies" that you should check out. The article delves into the huge amount of money coal company front groups are throwing into PR campaigns trying to convince Americans that "clean" coal exists and that phasing out coal will be a tragedy for the country.

From the article:

In June, Jim Rogers, the CEO of Duke Energy, one of the largest coal-burning utilities in America, admitted at an electric-power-industry conference that carbon capture and storage has been oversold as "a magical technology that solves the carbon problem for coal plants." Indeed, many energy experts now predict that carbon capture and storage won't be widely deployed until 2030.

The article discusses some of the commercials these coal front groups are airing, which are full of false information. We debunk these ads here on our Coal AdWatch page.

In related coal news, today the League of Women Voters just announced its opposition to any new coal-fired power plants.
