A park clean up kicked off the Green Jobs Now day of action event in Anacostia, DC, and was followed by a green jobs fair and rally. Guest speakers from local organizations including labor, environmental, and environmental justice groups addressed the crowd. There was even a guest appearance by Green for All founder and president, Van Jones. Speakers called for a clean energy economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty and put us on a path to energy independence.
With a warming planet, economic decline, and a rising unemployment rate (6.1% in Aug 2008) the United States needs a clean energy economy now more than ever. According to the Green Recovery report from the Center for American Progress, a one hundred billion dollar investment in the clean energy economy will result in two million new green jobs in two years! This is our chance to revitalize our communities with hundreds of thousands of good-paying clean energy jobs that can't be outsourced.
What kinds of jobs am I talking about? Green jobs range from solar panel installers and home weather-stripping specialists to sheet metal workers, truck drivers, and software engineers. If it is related to renewable energy it is a green job!
This event was part of a larger Green Jobs Now day of action made up of nearly 700 local events nation wide. Read more about other local events here.
