The Medical Center Company (MCCo) will be completely off coal by the end of 2011. MCCo is a private, non-profit energy company located in Ohio that powers Case Western Reserve Academy University, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and additional facilities in eastern Cleveland. Currently, the energy company generates steam for heat using four natural gas-fired boilers and two coal-fired boilers, but the new strategic plan calls for conversion to a completely coal-free facility by 2012. Sierra Club played a key role in encouraging the positive change through our strong presence at a public hearing about MCCo's current plant operations, grasstops networking, phonebanking, and coverage of media pitches to Ohio's largest newspaper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
