VA: Gingrich Joins Misleading Gas Gimmick Tour

Last week, Newt Gingrich appeared at an Virginia event offering cheap gas to drivers for $1.84 a gallon - a political stunt designed to pin the blame for high gas prices on the Obama administration, promoting a price organizers claimed matched the per gallon amount prior to President Obama taking office. Its part of an ongoing series of similar events occurring all over the country -  but what news coverage often fails to mention is that the cheap gas is being offered because the events themselves are put on by front groups sponsored by the very Big Oil executives raking in record profits when prices at the pump rise. 

Specifically, Gingrich’s event was funded by The New American Energy Opportunity Foundation (NAEOF) - a group chaired by the founder of one of the nation’s largest oil and gas investment firms, Noble Royalties. Similar events held in places like New Hampshire were sponsored by the shadowy front group, Americans for Prosperity, a group founded by oil tycoons Charles and David Koch. Gingrich himself has done well promoting policies that put oil first. With millions in donations from generous billionaires, Gingrich flew chartered jets around the country to promote the pro-oil campaign of his so-called "American Solutions for Winning the Future" group

Unfortunately, the reasons Gingrich and these oil front groups give for the high price of gas – namely, Obama’s energy policies – do not add up. As the former Chief Economist of the American Petroleum Institute explained in an email to Media Matters, the low price of gas touted at these events came after “the world economy began to slow down and ultimately to experience a deep recession.” Facts like that are why its critically important that Americans consider the source and pull back the curtain on events like these, using gimmicky publicity campaigns funded by oil companies and promoted by oil-backed spokespersons to criticize the same high gas prices that are helping those companies rake in billions of dollars in record profits. Hopefully, news organizations will do the same.
