Daily Tip: Dec 21, 2007
When snow piles up in your driveway, avoid using gasoline-powered removal equipment. Electric alternatives still use some energy but create less pollution. Better yet, get out shovels and brooms to clear the snow -- you'll use absolutely no energy but your own!

I like to remove snow with a plow- I read about people keeling over with heart attacks from shovling snow.

I'm all for brooms and shovels! I wish everybody would use them, also rakes and reel mowers for their lawns and leafs! So much for quiet weekends and fresh air...

Snow removal is excellent exercise for me. As an act of kindness I even sneak over to my neighbor's yard for a little extra.

Shoveling under our own steam is optimal when safe. However I too have heard about people having heart attacks when attempting to shovel the heavy, wet, DEEP snow where we live. I did it as a child and my parents did it until recently. They are now 80 and 82. They no longer shovel, plow or scoop anything.

Remember the time before leaf blowers and other obnoxious heavy petrol equipment became popular.. people used to have fun building leaf forts or snow castles.. people used to think that being outdoors was a majical experience full of beauty and one reason people may be experiencing heart attacks in record numbers is due in part to the sedate lifestyle that has evolved with technological revolution. perhaps we need to relearn some old skills and learn to respect and revere the Natural world again.

Love this tip! Another benefit is that shoveling snow is great exercise!
I'd also like to see people using a broom instead of the water hose to clean sidewalks and driveways.

I live in Michigan and Iam 60 years old. I enjoy shoveling but the last storm dumped 13 inches of wet/heavy snow. I broke down and used my gas guzzling snow thrower. Some times you have to compramise.

I feel for all you guys in snow country. Henk said it right about having to comprimise and I agree with Anne saying technology has made lazy folks of many.
It just makes me appreciate my hometown Miami
Florida that much more.

Hopefully, but not likely, our man made globull warming will prevent me from having to clear my driveway. In the meantime, I will continue using my snowblower. Lots of man made globull warming in NH. Weve got 2 feet of snow in our yard.
Weve already burned 20 percent of the worlds fossil fuel reserves. How much longer before NY city is submerged already?
Globull warming...the biggest punchline.
