We recently built a 600 sq. ft (od) unit in which we are living on a parcel in Sebastopol, CA. We used FSC lumber in the building, and in the kitchen cabinetry. It was not difficult to locate, and not very much more costly than traditional. We're glad we did it.

Every builder in the country should be using FSC lumber... And why not build houses out of stone if they get blown away by hurricanes, time after time? So much for saving money and the environment in the long run.

You can also use "recycled" wood from old buildings. My son manages a recycled wood business. This practice is tree and environment friendly.

Sustainable flooring: bamboo is fully renewable and when harvested after 5 years growth, as hard as oak. Cork is also renewable and durable. Recycled and recycle-able vinyl is suitable for institutions with special needs (e.g.,hospitals, schools). FSC hardwood wear-layered with recovered rubber wood core layer uses less sq.feet of exotic wood and eliminates the noxious fumes from burning no-longer producing rubber tree plantations. All the above are beautiful flooring solutions.
