Make seed pots by cutting newspapers into strips, dipping the strips in liquid cornstarch and wrapping them over a small container like a jar, inverted glass, etc to dry. Remove the dried seed pot, fill with potting soil (I use coffee grounds and tea leaves). When your seeds are ready for transplant set them in the ground, pot and soil and watch the grow.

I have heard that rolling newspapers into logs for a fireplace is not recommended as it can cause excessive creosote build-up in the chimney.

I thought the best thing to do with old newspaper is to recycle it.

By the way, using in compost or in place of other items that you would buy is "recycling" :)

One other that I use. Cut newspaper into strips about 2 inches or so wide. Put a stripe of water soluble glue(Elmers, etc) on the paper and adhere small seeds that are normally hard to spread, like carrot, without wasteing a ton of them and having them come up all over the place. Place in the garden and cover with soil. I do this inside a few weeks before I'm ready to put them outside and it works great.
