Beat the Heat -- Dress for the Weather

Has the summer heat got you hot and bothered? Stay tuned for this week's tips for staying cool.

Tip #2: Dress for the Weather

Stay comfortable in hot weather with lightweight, loose-fitting fabrics like linen or hemp. Most of us manage this pretty well on weekends, but what about during the workweek? In extreme heat, the traditional suit and tie feels unfashionably warm. The United Nations' New York headquarters has ditched the business suit requirement, opting instead to save energy by raising the AC five degrees. Some companies are taking the idea even further and allowing employees to wear shorts to the office.

Share your tips: Is your workplace climate-sensitive? Have you convinced your boss or building manager to adjust the thermostat? Tell us how you stay cool and save energy during the summer.

Why don't we in the West adopt the sort of clothes worn by people in tropical countries such as the Indian Subcontinent or Africa. They are cool and can if properly designed and made be smart as well. I can't imagine anything worse than a whole office or workshop filled with men in shorts, yuk!!

I believe in using fans while setting the air conditioners on 80 degrees. It works for me especially if I have on cool loose clothes and remember white is the coolest. Katherine

I keep my thermostat set high at home & use fans, and I'm notorious for turning off lights & appliances, but that's not an option at work. Until power bills start cutting into the Big Boy's profits, they're going to freeze us in the summer and cook us in the winter (in Houston, anyway).
