Green Beauty Products: Cosmetics
It's time to stop suffering from dry skin or frizzy hair. This week, we'll offer tips for finding green beauty products.
Tip # 4: Choose Better Make-Up
Cosmetics are often the most chemical-laden culprits in the beauty market, and they're applied directly to the face, one of the body's most sensitive and porous areas. And the chemicals aren't great for the environment, either. But sifting through labels can be daunting. To find make-up that doesn't do harm to your skin or the earth, go to the Spirit Beauty Lounge website; it's dedicated to locating beauty products with natural ingredients. Try Nvey Eco Creme Deluxe Foundation, which nourishes skin with safflower oil, jojoba oil, and herbal extracts. Or the company's lead-free and organic lipstick. Remember, though, that often, natural beauty doesn't need foundation or or lipstick.

Before I purchase cosmetics I always look them up on the cosmetic database site which is run by the Environmental Working Group. http://cosmeticdatabase.com/ It's really helpful and gives safety ratings on most brands.

For those of us forced to shop at discount stores and search for palces charging less money these items are really high--$28 for lipstick when other basic costs are so high. Perhaps going green is eliminating some makeup altogether?

I wear make-up according to my outfit. If I'm dressed nicely I wear make up, if it's every-day wear, I don't! Wearing make-up daily is overrated. When I do wear make-up I go for Aveda.

RE: today's Green Life tip on cosmetics, I have found the Environmental Working Group's "Skin Deep" Cosmetics Safety Database to be an invaluable

Why wear any make-up at all? Foundations, lip liners, eye liners and eye shadows clog skin pores. Are we so brain-washed and manipulated by advertisements and social prejudice? Beauty goes way beyond physical appearance.

Well, I wear some make-up because I have chestnut coloured hair but very fair eyelashes and eyebrows which you barely see without some make-up applied. Also, lipstick brightens up my face. I do like the new natural mineral powders too.

Arbonne makes a completely vegan line of all sorts of non-animal tested products, that although more expensive have completely saved my skin and my conscious

I use a little olive oil on my face (body too) after I wash. I'm happy with just lipstick usually. I'm lucky to have dark brows and lashes. I don't like mascara, it can irritate my eyes. I wear foundation on special occasions. My skin is sensitive but with the olive oil on first, I don't have a problem with cosmetics. I get the cheapest kinds.

I'm slowly making my way towards natural cosmetics. They're so expensive I have to buy them 1 at a time, but none the less I am getting there.

I realized last year that if my skin was clear and healthy I wouldn't feel the need to wear make-up. To meet my goal I did a lot of research and tried many products and lines (as clean as possible). I finally found my dream products - Organic Apoteke. It is a bit pricey but it really works. I figured I save on make-up. I am not sure if that logic really works, but it is how I justify it to myself. Beautiful, clear, healthy skin is worth it to me. www.organicapoteke.com.

I couldn't agree more! It's amazing what some people put on their face. I used to have horrible problems with acne anytime I wore even the lighest makup (clogged my pores). Usually I would just go without it but as I got older that became less of an option. I've tried lots of different commercial brands but my favorite finds have been the natural make up sold people who make it handmade. I'm also a vegan so anytime I know there is not animial additives or testing I'm happy.
