Movie Review Friday: Quantum of Solace

Escape to the movies with one of our Movie Review Friday selections. Each week, we review a film with an environmental or socially responsible theme that’s currently in theaters or available on DVD. Seen a good eco-flick lately? Send us a review of 100 or fewer words and look for your review in the next Movie Friday.

Quantum of Solace (2008)
In theaters.

The most recent James Bond movie is surprising in that it addresses the impending water crisis, implying that when the oil wars in the real world sputter out, the commodity of truest value will be water.

Daniel Craig’s Bond sees evidence of early water-related skirmishes and acts stunned. He says to M (Judi Dench), “This isn’t about oil.” She sort of gets it. The plot also has Bond and a gorgeous agent splashing and bashing their way through her countryside, encountering the first signs of water shortage in a rock-strewn village where the pipes have slowed to a trickle.

In a surreal action flick, having a mini-commentary on water brokering intrude into the story is jolting. Disturbingly, the bad guys pose as environmentally friendly dudes – and there’s a distinctly negative message about environmental philanthropy on the scale often seen at extravagant “save-the-planet” events. But maybe that’s too true to be ignored.

Still, Quantum can’t decide whether to be a violent mashup of political intrigue or a docudrama about the fragile future of our water supply. No solace for some of us.
