May is National Barbecue Month

Barbecue With May's first two weekend cookouts tucked away, along with a number of hamburgers and brauts, you may be looking for lighter fare to round out the month. Consider these three ideas to make your barbecuing easier on the environment:

1. Instead of creating tons of trash with disposable dishes, bring your reusable plates and cutlery outdoors. Worried about your ceramics surviving the picnic bench? Consider investing in reusable plasticware, like Preserve's 100% recycled plastic set.

2. Buy locally grown veggies and organically raised meats for the grill or, better yet, skip the meat altogether. Check out the vegetarian barbecue spread assembled by a group of barbie-loving Australians. Besides faux meats, there are plenty of alternatives like stuffed tomatoes or marinated tofu kebabs that make for great grilling.

3. Fight off insect invaders without chemicals. Bug sprays containing DEET are bad for your health and the earth. Opt instead for a natural repellent like lemon eucalypus.
