A Day of Monumental Changes and Defaced Monuments

Mt rushmore Three Greenpeace activists rappelled down Mount Rushmore National Memorial today, placing a 65’ x 35’ banner adjacent to Abraham Lincoln’s face. The banner features a partial portrait of President Obama and reads, “America Honors Leaders, Not Politicians. Stop Global Warming.” This act of protest coincides with the beginning of the G8 Summit, this year held in L’Aquila, Italy.

The gathering hosts the leaders of the world’s richest nations: the U.S., Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Japan, along with representatives from the E.U. and developing countries, as they meet to discuss issues such as the global economic crisis, international trade, developing nations, health, nuclear proliferation, the situation in the Middle East and North Korea, not least of all, and climate change.

Greenpeace hopes to draw attention to the global-warming issue on the G8 agenda, and to compel Obama to take the lead in constructing a clean, sustainable world. Obama has repeatedly spoken about his concern pertaining to climate change, and his dedication to deal with this problem prudently, aggressively, and immediately.

Today, the first day of the summit, the G8 agreed on a global temperature limit, the first such limit of its kind, pledging to keep the planet's overall temperature from increasing more than 2 degrees Celsius. They also came to a consensus regarding emission limits; the agreement stipulates that developed nations will reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050, and in that same time developing nations will make 50 percent reductions. No short-term goals were set for any country.
