Haiti Horror: Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, yesterday suffered a 7.0 earthquake epicentered just 10 miles from its capital, Port-Au-Prince. Thousands may be dead and humanitarian relief efforts are rising to meet the urgent demand. Guardian and ENN

Jump-Starting Jobs: A new White House report shows that 63,000 clean-energy jobs were created last quarter as a result of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. The report predicts that, through 2012, the act will create 719,600 job-years (one person employed for one year) in the green sector. Sierra Club

Green Car News:
In 2009, the Prius was Japan's bestselling car, the first time a hybrid has held that spot. It's been successful enough that Toyota plans to make it a sub-brand. It’ll face competition from Ford, which says the next Focus model will be all-electric. ENN and Los Angeles Times

Paradise’s Plan: Hawaii officials announced yesterday that the state has a strategy to reduce trash in the ocean; efforts will include collection and prevention. Dot Earth (NYT)

Midair Collisions:
According to new data, incidents of airplanes hitting birds and wildlife are increasing, posing a safety threat not only to the animals but also to the humans inside the planes. NPR
