Daily Roundup: January 7, 2010

Contaminant Crackdown: The EPA today proposed the strictest smog and ozone limits ever presented in the U.S.; if the new rules take hold, much of the nation would be in violation. Los Angeles Times

No Joke: Climate-change skeptics in Fairbanks, Alaska, erected a two-ton ice sculpture bearing Al Gore's likeness. They piped vehicle exhaust through his mouth while a recording of Gore speaking about global warming played on a loudspeaker. Onlookers laughed. Ecorazzi

Spring Still Silent: New evidence shows that pesticide exposure, even at low levels, may be to blame for bees’ colony collapse disorder, as well as the recent mass die-offs of bats and amphibians. Yale Environment 360

Salt Into Wound: A new report says that the Middle East is contending with, among all the region’s other problems, a serious water crisis. The populations of more than 17 Arabic countries live significantly below the water-poverty line (500 cubic meters per year). Green Prophet

Slight Blip: A recent discovery of 395-million-year-old fossils in Poland has shaken up scientists’ conception of the evolutionary time line. Apparently, the first vertebrates to walk on land started doing so 20 million years earlier than previously thought. National Geographic and Scientific American
