Shook-Up China: A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a remote, impoverished area in Western China today, killing at least 400 and trapping hundreds under collapsed buildings. New York Times

Trash Collectors: More than 10 million pieces of trash were collected around the world on one day last September, according to the Ocean Conservancy. Some 500,000 volunteers collected everything from cigarettes and plastic bags to washing machines and medical waste. MSNBC

Roundup Resistance: A new report says that use of genetically modified crops is increasing weed resistance to an herbicide called Roundup. New York Times

Lost and Found: After years of debate, Malaysian authorities have agreed to nominate the species-rich Maliau Basin in Northern Borneo a World Heritage Site, in direct opposition to timber and mining interests. Known as "the lost world," much of the region remains unexplored. The Times

Glacial Glide: A gigantic glacier broke off and plunged into a lake near Carhuaz, Peru, causing huge waves, three deaths, and extensive property damage. UPI
