Double Up on Eco-Celebrations this Weekend
Saturday marks two important commemorative events, World Environment Day and National Trails Day, giving you two more reasons to grab your sneakers and head outside.
Established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5. Correspondingly, the U.N. has organized thousands of events worldwide with a mission to give people the knowledge and resources to help change things for the better.
This year, the official North American WED celebrations will be in Pittsburgh and will include a citywide cleanup, movie screenings, tree plantings, and scientific forums. But if you’re elsewhere, there are plenty of ways you can observe this international holiday: plant your own tree, install compact fluorescent bulbs, or set up a compost system in your backyard.
National Trails Day (NTD) began in 1993 with a partnership between the American Hiking Society and several other parties hoping to raise awareness about America's 200,000 miles of trails and those who maintain and protect them.
Tell us: How will you celebrate WED and NTD?
