Harsh Words for Oil Spill
The internet's brightest stars gathered at the 14th annual Webby Awards on Monday to enjoy the event's signature five-word speeches and applaud the year's best websites, online videos, and ads. Recipients' super-short acceptance speeches exposed the important issues and hip topics of the day. Aside from finding the exercise entertaining, why do we care about the night's soundbites? Because BP's oil catastrophe was mentioned by more than a few Webby winners.
Actress Isabella Rossellini, who won the Best Individual Performance award for Green Porno, said, "I say, plug the hole." Documentary winner Waterlife's statement was, "Oil and waterlife don't mix." The spokesperson from 99designs said, "BP Suck. Fotolia Rock. Donate."
While five-word speeches won't do much to stop the gushing in the Gulf, public awareness of the crisis is a crucial first step towards breaking our oil dependence. At the Webbys, it took just five words to remind us that we should be doing a better job of protecting the planet for future generations. The no-nonsense speech from Best Youth Website winner National Geographic Kids put it best: "Kids think oil spills suck."
Tell us: How would you describe BP's oil disaster in five words?
