Tomorrow, June 8, is World Oceans Day
Tomorrow is World Oceans Day, which aims to encourage us to protect and celebrate our seas. The World Ocean Network and the Ocean Project collaborated and, after six years of work, established the date by way of a successful petition to the U.N.
On June 8, aquariums, museums, libraries, stores, and community centers across the nation will host ocean-themed events including craft fairs, teacher workshops, fundraisers, musical performances, sustainable-cooking demonstrations, mural painting, and beach trash collections. All Pottery Barn Kids stores will offer activities, giveaways, and readings of ocean-themed children’s books. Some event planners got really creative: in La Jolla, California, you can grab your paddleboard and enjoy story time in a “floating reading room” right on the Pacific, an event sponsored by Surf Diva.
The oceans' health affects all of us, so it’s exciting that more than 50 countries participate in World Oceans Day each year. Consider signing this pledge or finding an event near you to commemorate the day.
