Green Your Camping Trip: Careful With That Campfire

Camping is fun for the family The kids are out of school and summer's in full swing, so it's the perfect time for a camping trip. This week's tips will help you green your tent time.

Tip #3: Build a Low-Impact Campfire

When camping on established sites, it's best to bring your own firewood. If you're in the backcountry, use only fallen sticks found on the ground. To ensure that your firewood burns completely, choose wood that is smaller than the diameter of your wrist. At campsites where there are no established fire rings, use a fire pan or build a small mound fire. To prevent forest fires, never leave flames or coals unattended, and always douse hot ash with a lot of water. In environments where fires are inappropriate, put a water bottle on a flashlight and bask in its glow!
