The Great Rift (2010)

Premiering August 22 on Animal Planet and coming soon to DVD

This three-episode BBC series explores the extreme, dynamic ecosystems of Africa's Great Rift Valley. The narrator, Hugh Quarshie, tells us that the volcano-dotted region is one of the "hot spots of evolution," where a staggering variety of wildlife thrive and new species are still being discovered. In addition to the standard wildlife-documentary eye candy – vivid shots of lions, flamingos, and elephants – the filmmakers captured valuable footage of animals such as the kipunji, a rare monkey that was discovered in 2005 and had never been filmed before.

The DVD extras include three ten-minute "making of" segments that detail the project's risk and complexity. The first episode's extra focuses on a crew member daring to spend the night in a pitch-black, bat-filled cave with a group of wild baboons to film the animals' elusive nightlife.

Achieving the high level of quality that nature lovers have come to expect from BBC Earth's documentaries, this series delivers captivating wildlife scenes set against the dramatic vistas that are nourished and ravaged by Earth's natural cycles. The Great Rift, accompanied by a score of traditional African music, is a stunning portrait of a teeming corner of our ever-changing world.
