Green Your Bicycle: Build or Buy Used

Bicycle Let's ride! Pedal power is airy, sweaty, liberating – and exhaust-free. This week's tips are about how to make your bicycle even greener.

Tip #1: Build or Buy Used

Looking for a bicycle? Consider skipping the big-box sporting-goods store. Instead, visit a used-bike shop, browse pre-owned bikes on Craigslist, or build your own two-wheeler out of recycled parts at a bicycle collective near you. You'll save money, support your local bicycle gurus, and conserve the energy and mineral resources required to manufacture a new bicycle.

And if you have a spare bike, pass it along.

Tip #2: Accessorize Thoughtfully

Tip #3: Learn Bike Maintenance

Tip #4: Get Comfortable

Tell us: How do you green your bicycle?
