The Incredible (In)edible Egg
Last month's recall of half a billion salmonella-contaminated eggs might make your breakfast healthier and the nation's chickens happier. For food activists, the outbreak is a call to action:
Iowa's Sierra Club is urging its state to require chickens to get vaccinated against salmonella, and to make egg recalls mandatory, not voluntary.
Food and Water Watch, a consumer-rights group, blames the outbreak on the egg industry's consolidation. The group urges Americans to sign a petition to "challenge the corporate control of our food system."
Slow Food USA, a group dedicated to reconnecting Americans with their food, wants you to press Congress to strengthen food-safety laws. To get inspired, watch their campaign video, above.
