Green Your Roof: Plant Vegetation

Let grass grow on your roof We hope that President Obama's recent decision to install solar panels on the White House roof will inspire others to rethink their shingles. This week's tips are about methods to make your roof eco-friendly.

Tip #2: Sprout a Green Roof

The White House isn't the only presidential residence with eco-cred — the first dog, Bo, reportedly sleeps in a green-roofed abode. You can beautify and insulate your (or your pet's) home by installing a vegetated roof. While a green roof may be more expensive to install than a traditional roof, you can save more than $200,000 over its life via reduced heating and air-conditioning costs. In addition, roof plantings absorb stormwater and carbon dioxide.
