Green Your Yoga: Mind the Mat
With its emphasis on living mindfully, yoga teaches us to tread lightly on Mother Earth. This week's tips explore how yogis can get more out of their practice by minimizing their environmental footprints.
Tip #2: Mind the Mat
Most yoga mats are made from PVC, which contains carcinogens and outgasses 108 different chemicals in the first month of use. Avoid the plastic and purchase a jute, hemp, or natural rubber mat instead. Recycle your old mat or convert it into a useful household item, such as knee pads for gardening or drawer liners. If you're in the market for other yoga equipment, choose organic cotton straps, hemp bolsters, and bamboo blocks.
