Exposing the Twinkie

Twinkies One of America's most recognizable treats is getting a public autopsy from San Francisco photographer and concerned parent Dwight Eschliman. By separately photographing each of the 37 ingredients listed on a Twinkie package, Eschliman hopes to demonstrate that food doesn't have to be so complicated.

Inspired by Coi Restaurant chef Daniel Patterson, whose restauant uses the freshest, simplest ingredients possible, Eschliman decided to show food's other extreme. And it turns out many of the ingredients in a Hostess Twinkie could only be found at a chemical-supply store; their names include diglyrceride and calcium caseinate (the latter is used to make plaster of Paris). Some of the ingredients even came with hazardous warning signs. 

Eschliman's goal wasn't to scare parents, but to make them think about the kinds of food they buy for their kids. After all, sometimes the easiest way to make a point is also the simplest
