Israel Constructing a New Green Tunnel
Earlier this month, the Israeli city of Haifa announced plans to construct a new tunnel in accordance with green building standards. It'll run underneath Mount Carmel, allowing travelers to bypass the congested city center.
In a statement, Israel's Ministry of Tourism described how plans for the tunnel aim to "prevent the extensive environmental impact that the construction of an overland road would have caused." In addition, the project will involve replanting the surrounding hillside with native trees and white lilies, in place of what was previously a landfill.
The effort fits into the ministry’s efforts to bill the nation as a hotspot of environmental stewardship. Earlier stories on the organization’s blog announce that "Tel Aviv is Going Green" and describe the town of Amirim as "Paradise for the Vegetarian Traveler."
