Art Contest Targets Trash
The EPA wants students in San Francisco to participate in its 2011 Earth Day Art Contest.
Activists have long known that visual displays can help raise awareness about environmental issues and as we saw with the slew of creative work made in response to the BP oil spill, art also provides an outlet for the frustration and grief caused by environmental tragedies.
The art contest's theme, "Trash in Our Oceans," offers plenty of potential for both approaches. Ocean-related drawings, photographs, video, and sculpture will be accepted from students in four categories: elementary school, middle school, high school, and art schools and colleges. Entries are due by March 31, 2011. In line with the EPA's goal of keeping trash out of the oceans, the use of recycled materials is encouraged.
