Taking Guesswork Outta Groceries: There's an App... Well, You Know.

A diet that's mostly fruits and vegetables is good for the planet, but negotiating a grocery store's produce section can be intimidating. Farmanac, a new iPhone app, is a great tool for shoppers who want to make informed decisions about the produce they buy.

Using the app, you can look up a fruit or vegetable by name or by PLU code to learn its pesticide score (calculated with data from the Environmental Working Group) and when it's in season locally. Farmanac also gives a basic description of each item, including how to select and store it, which is especially helpful if you're trying a new type of fruit and aren't sure how to tell if it's ripe or what to do to keep it fresh. With more than 1,400 items listed, you'll have no excuse for falling into a diet rut.
