Good morning Sierra Club Nation! We're happy to share the Mission Outdoors Military Family and Veterans Initiative Blog with Higher Ground today discussing their partnership with the Club!
Sierra Club Partners With Higher Ground To Provide Exceptional Outdoor Rehabilitation for Veterans
In the summer of 2012, Higher Ground (HG) will partner with Sierra Club to provide wounded veterans with world-class rehabilitation through outdoor recreation. Our entire staff could not be more excited to partner with Sierra Club, a world-class organization with a history steeped in passion for the outdoors.
Over the last eight years, HG has developed its therapeutic programming around the firm belief that outdoor recreation provides a life changing catalyst for people suffering from PTSD and TBIs. From basic stress relief to profound inspiration, we have found that the simple act of sharing time outdoors with others facilitates astonishing improvement in symptom control and quality of life.
Our staff has worked tirelessly to compile hard evidence of the somewhat abstract magic of the outdoors and share it with as many people as possible. In Sierra Club, HG has found a likeminded partner with the same goal: proving the importance of outdoor recreation as a form of rehabilitation.
Sierra Club and their research partner The University of Michigan came up with an ambitious plan to compile more research on the subject of recreation as rehabilitation than likely anyone or any organization has attempted before. By combining the efforts of HG with those of similar veteran service organizations around the country, The University of Michigan will collect comprehensive research data and achieve a sample size that would take HG and others years to match on their own.
We can’t wait to see the results and, more importantly, see the how the results impact the care our American veterans receive.
With this opportunity to collaborate with Sierra Club, The University of Michigan and other organizations around the country, HG looks forward to propelling both its programming and dedication to the next level.
Thanks to Sierra Club, the future for wounded veterans around the country is brighter than ever.
