Good morning Sierra Club Nation!
We at Mission Outdoors are very excited to partner with Southwest Conservation Corps this year to provide a ten day backcountry conservation expeditions in Arizona and Colorado this year. Information, and the right links and websites to get you signed up or find more information are below:
The Veterans Fire Corps Back Country Conservation Experience immerses a cohort of ten recent era veterans in an educational and inspirational journey through the wildlands of the Southwest. While participating in the Backcountry Conservation Experience, cohort members will gain hands on experience living communally and working in the outdoors. Participants spend ten days in the backcountry traveling on foot between remote campsites on our National Parks and Forests, routinely taking part in small scale service projects. The service projects are led by experienced field leaders and are aimed at providing an introduction to conservation, forestry and wildland fire work as well as spurring a general interest in volunteerism and national service. Participants will receive daily instruction and education in backcountry living, Leave No Trace ethics, the history of the conservation movement, and the geology and ecology of thesouthwest. Volunteers from the outdoor industry as well as fire and federal land management agencies will also be on hand to discuss a variety of topics including potential career paths. Participants who successfully complete the Backcountry Conservation Experience will have the opportunity to continue serving with the Southwest Conservation Corps Veteran Fire CorpsProgram, a twelve to twenty-four week intensive training and service opportunity providing the basic skills for veterans to qualify for federal timber, fuels, trails, and wildland firefighting jobs and careers.
This is a great program for many veterans who may be interested in just getting outside, exploring potential job opportunities in conservation, forestry, and wildland fire, those interested in a one of a kind service trip, or who simply want ten days of adventure and camaraderie with fellow veterans.
The dates of the program are below:
- May 7th – May 16th 2012 – Basin and Range – Southern Arizona Sky Islands (Tucson, Arizona)
- June 30th – July 9th 2012 – Colorado High Country (Durango, Colorado)
- August 10th – August 21st 2012 – Sand to Summits (Salida, Colorado)
Now get outside!
