Sierra Club Student Leader Wins Udall Scholarship
No foolin'! On April 1, University of Minnesota Campuses Beyond Coal co-founder Siri Simons was awarded the 2011 Udall Scholarship in recognition of her commitment to the environment. Established by Congress in 1992, the Udall Foundation honors Arizona Congressman Morris Udall's 30-year legacy of public service and commitment to environmental reform.
Simons, a junior at the university, is pursuing a bachelor of science in environmental sciences, policy, and management. She plans to work in the field of sustainable agriculture and hopes to direct an environmental non-profit that collaborates with farmers, consumers, and government officials to support organic farming and soil & water conservation through policy change.
"Siri is a rock-star leader," says Minneapolis-based Sierra Club organizer Michele Rosier, who gives kudos to Sierra Student Coalition organizer Tim Harlan-Marks and Club staffer Jessica Tatro for mentoring Simons last year.
