A Golden Opportunity
You already know to get organic flowers and chocolate for your Valentine. But if you're planning on wooing with some gold jewelry, you can green that gift as well.
The environmental and social costs of gold mining are staggering: Producing a single gold ring generates some 20 tons of mining waste. For the past six years, the No Dirty Gold Campaign has been advocating for better mining practices. Thanks in part to their efforts, 61 jewelry retailers in the U.S. and around the world have signed the Golden Rules -- social, human-rights, and environmental criteria for more responsible mining of gold and other precious metals.
Today the campaign is releasing a new report that issues a grade for the jewelry retailers that have agreed to these guidelines. Tiffany & Co. gets a "B," Walmart a "C," and JCPenney a "D."
