How to Plant a Tree
California's Arbor Week begins on March 7. Whether or not you live in California, it’s a great reason to plant a tree. Don’t know how? Both the International Society of Arboriculture and the National Arbor Foundation provide a wealth of online resources to guide you through the process.
To begin with, you'll want to consider what kind of tree to plant. NAF's tree guide provides detailed information about different species, including regional recommendations -- and they sell nearly 200 varieties. Also determine how much space is available for your tree (Are there utility lines underground or overhead?) and your tree’s function (To provide shade? Act as a windbreak?). Both sites provide step-by-step instructions for planting a sapling. For example, you should dig a shallow, broad hole only as deep as the root ball, but three times as wide. The ISA can also connect you to a certified arborist in your area.
